The Centaur, a revolutionary self-balancing 2 wheeled micro mobility chair is nearly here!

When PMW was approached to provide motors for the wheels for this balancing wheelchair it was immediately clear how special this project is. After three years of careful research, engaging with communities using mobility aids and understanding challenges, Centaur Robotics have invented this very clever slimline, highly manoeuvrable fully electric wheelchair. The design intent was such that it only take the space of a standard chair, giving users complete integration into standard table and chair room configurations. It looks like it works in a similar way to a Segway, but with a joystick to control travel, when the user needs to move in the chair (e.g. reach for an item), the gyroscope and control system cleverly keep it stable, preventing it from lunging forwards or backwards unexpectedly.

This really is big leap forward, using technology and engineering to deliver inclusive micro-mobility. FutureMotiv are engineering partners also on this project. With some further funding needed for the next step towards production we are willing this brilliant project on and wish it every success. The Centaur is planned to be on sale by the second quarter of 2023 – when in the words of Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson it will provide “freedom to do what you want, when you want”. Check out the video below, taken in the soft launch phase when The Centaur was revealed in May 2022 in the Lancaster Room of Somerset House, London:
